I read ten books in August 2024 and this month was quite a mixture. We’ll start with an old friend.
A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford
I’ve read this very long book several times, starting with my grandmother’s copy when I was a teenager. It’s a long book that had several sequels that failed to stand up to the original. It was fun to reread but I think it will be the last time. The writing does not hold up to my more discerning eye.
Danny, The Champion of the World by Roald Dahl
This is an old favorite from my childhood. The story is fun but what is really wonderful is the father-son relationship.
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Budoni
This is one of those books that means something. It’s the story of a boy who is born with red eyes, who ultimately comes to realize the meaning behind everything he goes through in his life, what it was preparing him for and leading him to. It’s a very Catholic book too,
Her Last Breath by Hillary Davidson
I just read the summary and I don’t remember this at all! It’s a thriller. And there are sisters. And a murder.
Real Bad Things by Kelly A. Ford
Gotta love that title, am I right? It was actually pretty good, though–a story about a woman who returns to the small town she fled years ago after her evil stepfather’s murder, and all the secrets that are revealed.
Mother of All Secrets by Kathleen Willett
Oh, I really enjoyed this one! Imagine a murder story that revolves around a moms’ group.
The Last Lie Told by Debra Webb
This was the first in a series, each of which is a mystery on its own but also reveals part of another mystery that happened earlier, the murder of the main character’s husband. She’s also a detective, and I was interested enough in her and her story to pay for the second two installments below:

Having enjoyed the above three so much, I looked to see if I had any other books on my phone by Debra Webb, which I did. This was the first in another series of three, about a single mother who is a police detective and not very fond (yet) of her new, bad-boy partner.
I love discovering new series to enjoy, and I am always said when they come to an end.
