I started off January in a big way, reading not only five books from my Christmas haul but also some McKay’s finds AND a free Kindle book for good measure.
Keep the Memories, Lose the Stuff by Matt Paxton
A very cool book by a guy who helps people minimize while honoring their attachments to their possessions. I wish I could hire him, as I am determined not to leave behind a mess for other people to sort out and feel guilty over.
Marmee: A Novel of Little Women by Sarah Miller
Little Women, which I have read approximately 5,000 times, retold from Marmee’s point of view. I thought this was very well done. I especially enjoyed the fleshing out of the Hummel familty, and the explanation of how the Marches lost their money.
Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature by Sarah B. Hart
What a fun read! I’ll bet you never thought about the connection–I know I hadn’t.
Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy
This is a another reimagination of a beloved character, but this time it’s a prequel, a look into Marilla Cuthbert’s life from her childhood right up until Anne Shirley came to Green Gables. I loved the depth it added to Marilla’s character.
A Short History of San Francisco by Tom Cole
It’s no secret that I love San Francisco. I love it so much that I wanted to know more about its history. It was fascinating, especially the Gold Rush parts.
Black Echo by Michael Connelly
As I’ve mentioned many times, I love this series. Weirdly, I’ve read them all out of order, and it turns out this is Hieronymous (aka Harry) Bosch’s very first appearance in print.
Resurrection Walk by Michael Connelly
For contrast, this is one of Connelly’s most recent novels, and this one features his other protagonist, fMickey Haller, whom you might know as the Lincoln Lawyer. Mickey is a lawyer who’s not afraid to push boundaries but he usually ends up on the right side of justice.
Woman on the Verge by Kim Hooper
This is a book about the demands of motherhood and the different ways women deal with them. It has a hell of a twist that I totally did not see coming.
